The traditional tale has been freshened with a blast of girl power, courtesy of writer Linda Woolverton (Beauty and the Beast). Alice, 17, attends a party at a Victorian estate only to find she is about to be proposed to in front of hundreds of snooty society types. Off she runs, following a white rabbit into a hole and ending up in Wonderland, a place she visited 10 years before yet doesn't remember.

The character in the movie is played by Anne Hathaway. "There's this very beautiful cooking show host in England named Nigella Lawson and I quietly had her as my image for this character," Burton said. "She's really beautiful and she does all this cooking, but then there's this glint in her eye and when you see it you go, 'Oh, whoa, she's like really ... nuts.' I mean in a good way. Well, maybe. I don't know." See more » Goofs: Continuity: When Alice takes the Bandersnatch's eye away from the Dormouse, the size of the eye increases to about the size of a baseball. The Dormouse had the eye tied to his belt, so it was quite small. But when Alice holds it in her giant size hand, the eye should have been about the size of a marble, not a baseball.
