"BIOSHOCK" Film Delayed

Gore Verbinski's big budget adaptation of the hit video game "BIOSHOCK" has been temporarily been put on hold by studio Universal. According to Variety the issue falls down to the film's budget, which is rumored to be in the region of $160million dollars. Universal is apparently committed to making the film, but is looking for ways to save cash.

Verbinski says: "We were asked by Universal to move the film outside of the US to take advantage of a tax credit. We are evaluating whether this is something we want to do. In the meantime, the film is in a holding pattern."

One can hardly blame Universal in wanting to look for ways to cut costs, the studio funded the $60million dollar "DOOM", which didn't even regain it's full budget in worldwide release. Getting a sizeable budget for a video game adaptation certainly will be harder after that. And "BIOSHOCK" needs a healthy budget in order to fully capture the rich art deco production design of the city of Rapture as well as create all the needed visual and special effects.

It doesn't even matter whether or not the movie is horrible. If you spend the money to make it, and the title IS indeed 'Bioshock', ANYONE who played the game is going to see it. If the movie ends up being horrible, they still bought the ticket opening night, and they still made their cash at the box office regardless of the quality of the film. What Universal fails to see is that Gore Verbinski is clearly the best person to direct an UNDERWATER movie, having succeeded amazingly with the Pirates titles, and no matter -what-, as long as it has Bioshock in the title millions of people are going to see it. They need to trust him more.
