Silver Keen On "SWAMP THING" Remake
Out doing promotion for his upcoming Antarctica-set murder thriller "WHITEOUT", producer Joel Silver told Collider that he hopes to do a new film version of comic book hero "SWAMP THING"."I'm developing a picture now that I'd like to do. I'll hopefully do "SWAMP THING", which is a movie we've had for a long time. We think that would be great to do in 3D. There are a couple of projects I'm thinking about (for the format) but not everything. Maybe I'm going to do it. I like it" says Silver.
In the comics, the titular man is a humanoid mass of vegetable matter who fights to protect his swamp home, the environment in general, and humanity from various supernatural or terrorist threats.
Created in the early 70's, the comic was headed towards cancellation in 1983 until Alan Moore ("WATCHMEN", "V FOR VENDETTA") essentially rebooted the property, changing many of the details and refocusing the horror fantasy property into a more literary realm targeted directly at adults.
The property was previously turned into two live-action films, 1982's "SWAMP THING" directed by Wes Craven and 1989's "THE RETURN OF SWAMP THING" directed by Jim Wynorski. The property was also turned into an early 90's live-action cable TV series for USA which ran for three seasons and a short lived animated series in 1991 for FOX.
Collider managed to catch up with producer Joel Silver at the "WHITEOUT" junket earlier today, and they got the head of Dark Castle to spill a little bit about his upcoming 3D slate. According to Silver, he hopes to do a remake of Swamp Thing utilizing the immersive cinematic process.
