SITGES 07 - 40th Edition Presentation

SITGES 07 COMMITTED TO FIRST WORKS IN ITS OFFICIAL SELECTION

George A. Romero and Rutger Hauer, among the festival’s outstanding guests

The SITGES – International Film Festival of Catalonia will be opening its 40th edition, on October 4th, with one of the season’s most awaited first works, The Orphanage, by J.A. Bayona (out-of-competition) that will give way to the Official Fantàstic Selection with the outstanding presence of public debuts: Timecrimes, by Nacho Vigalondo; El Rey de la Montaña (King of the Hill), by Gonzalo López-Gallego; El último Justo, by Manuel Carballo; À l'intèrieur (Inside), by Julien Maury and Alexandre Bustillo; Danniponjin, by Hitoshi Matsumoto; First Snow, by Mark Fergus; Frontière(s), by Xavier Gens; La habitación de Fermat, by Luis Piedrahita and Rodrigo Sopeña; Joshua, by George Ratliff; The Nines, by John August; The Signal, by David Bruckner, Dan Bush, Jacob Gentry; Teeth, by Mitchell Lichtenstein and Tres Minutos, by Diego Lublinski, make up over half of the competition.

One of the lines accentuated in the Official Selection at this year’s edition is the recovery of Catalan and Spanish movie productions, which indicates the excellent moment the fantasy genre is experiencing in our country, revived thanks to titles like Pan’s Labyrinth by Guillermo del Toro.

The Festival also wishes to highlight its program’s orientation toward the purest fantasy genre cinema, with more horror than science fiction and bringing it closer to everyday fears, invasions, post 9-11 terror and, above all, an important participation by zombie movies.

Another characteristic of the movies you can see at Sitges 07 is the reflection of fear through the camera, the metalinguistics of horror reflected in feature films like Rec, Diary of the Dead, Redacted or American Zombie, among others.

The program will include independent proposals coming from other festivals like Sundance or Tribeca, auteur films with a fantasy background and new languages (The Nines, First Snow, Joshua).

As always, our movies nights will run into the wee hours of the morning with outstanding screenings like the digital copy of Blade Runner: The Final Cut or the full-length version of Grindhouse (with the attendance of two of its leading ladies, Zöe Bell and Sydney Tamiia Poitier).

The 25th anniversary of Blade Runner will be celebrated in Sitges with the attendance of Syd Mead (production design), Douglas Trumbull (digital effects) and Rutger Hauer, who will receive the Time Machine award.

Other guests who will receive this award are William Friedkin, Syd Mead, Robert Englund, Alex Proyas and Jesús Franco.

The Grand Festival Award will be George A. Romero, while director Larry Fessenden will receive the Honorary María.

The Official Fantàstic Jury will be made up by Zöe Bell (actress, Grindhouse); Mirito Torreiro (movie critic); Martin Weisz (director), Rugero Deodato (director) and Michael Rooker (actor).

During the Festival several encounters between the audience and guests, through master classes and Q&A’s after screenings.
