One thing to be aware of is that the production company went to pains to remove most mythological elements (including Arthurian) from the screenplay -- this includes the stories grounding in British culture and folklore. This kind of wholesale disregard for the source story is indicative of the slash and burn approach the screenwriter took in grossly re-writing the story. Just as generic fantasy magic has replaced the heart of true British mystic roots in the story, so has generic plotting and cliched characters replaced the rich details found in Cooper's novel.
